Trying to bring down the number of hoax calls, Coast Guardofficials have installed a state-of-the-art monitoring system insouthern Lake Michigan that will be able to figure out whether a callcame from the water or on land.
The Doppler 6000 Radio Direction Finder will reduce search timesfor the rescuers using a four-antennae system along Chicago'swaterfront. When a rescue call comes in, the system will pinpoint thelongitude and latitude of the call and display it on a computerscreen.
